A “whole-person approach to patient care” has helped Sydney Adventist Hospital achieve a double distinction in a prestigious international quality report.

New South Wales’ largest private hospital, operated by Adventist HealthCare, has been listed in the Newsweek World's 'Best Specialized Hospitals 2023' survey for the second year in a row – this time for both its oncology and cardiology services.

It is the second time the hospital – also known as the San – has made the world’s top 250 ranking for cancer treatments, while its cardiology department appears in the top 300 for the first time.

“This is a truly outstanding achievement,” said Adventist HealthCare CEO, Brett Goods.

“The San has been leading the way in private cancer and heart care for decades. What sets us apart is that we not only provide our patients with access to New South Wales’ leading health professionals and modalities, but also our whole-person approach to patient care,” he added.

“Our health professionals don't simply treat conditions; they take a multidisciplinary approach to personalised care.

“When you come to the San, you know there is a team of the best experts behind you every step of the way and it's nice to see us being consistently recognised for providing our community with outstanding care.”

The San has moved up three places in the Newsweek oncology rankings to 243rd, reflecting its high performances in the past three years in the state-wide patient surveys run by the Bureau of Health Information in partnership with the Cancer Institute of NSW.

Its multidisciplinary Integrated Cancer Centre is complemented by the radiation therapy services provided by the co-located Icon Cancer Centre Wahroonga.

“Over many years, we have developed a high-volume cancer service at the San run by some of the most outstanding health professionals in New South Wales,” said San Integrated Cancer Centre's Clinical Director, Associate Professor Gavin Marx.

“It's clear that our highly-skilled team and constant innovation have led to excellent patient outcomes and an impressive reputation in Australia and internationally."

The Newsweek survey included online recommendations from doctors in 20 countries, plus publicly-available patient satisfaction survey results and hospitals’ medical key performance indicators.

The San, which has provided comprehensive cardiac care for over 40 years, ranked 200th in the cardiology section.

“The San is fortunate to have an outstanding cohort of cardiologists, supported by specialist nurses, allied health and other support staff, which enable us to undertake complex cardiology procedures and provide the best care for our patients,” Head of Department Dr Elizabeth Shaw said.
