The first issue of Renew for 2026 explores how the energy transition is playing out on school rooftops, in local communities and inside our homes.

Our cover story follows Mount Alexander Secondary College in the inner suburbs of Melbourne as it turns a large, underused roof into a long-term solar asset. Drawing on first-hand experience, the feature walks through approvals, funding, tendering and installation, offering a practical roadmap for schools and community organisations considering rooftop solar of their own.

As well as looking at a range of circular solutions—from repurposing EV batteries for stationary storage to extending the life of ageing computers by switching to Linux—we investigate mould as a hidden indoor risk (and how you can combat it in your home), trace the rise of microplastics through kitchens and laundries, and share practical strategies for reducing food waste through better fridge storage.

We return to the idea that energy systems work best when they’re local and collaborative. In Adelaide, we report on the City of Mitcham’s Community Renewables Program, which has helped more than 1,000 households overcome cost and confidence barriers to installing solar and batteries. We also look at the growing potential of Community Energy Zones, designed to better align how electricity is generated, used and managed at a local level. And bringing a global perspective, we look at how distributed solar and storage are expanding energy access across Africa, often leapfrogging traditional grid models.

This issue also asks a bigger question: how do we move fast on climate action without leaving nature behind? In this feature, Janina Waldmann examines why protecting biodiversity must be a core part of the renewable energy transition, not an afterthought, and what’s at stake if speed becomes the only measure of success.
